The area...
Elounda is a beautiful area – quiet yet with villages and towns on your doorstep. Elounda town itself is 5 minutes in a taxi and has its main square as the hub, lined with shops and tavernas and looking out onto the little harbour.
Only a short taxi ride (about 5 minutes) or a 20 minute walk on a pedestrian-safe coastal road is the tiny village of Plaka with has a few shops, bars and tavernas.
Regular boat trip to the famous Spinalonga Island, a fortress and former Leper colony famed in the book ‘The Island’ leave from the hotels pier or from Plaka (cheaper).
Crete has numerous archaeological sites too with Knossos being well worth a visit – the myth of the lair of the Minotaur will keep the children entertained - and is within an hours drive.
