What were the best things about your holiday?
Totally relaxing. Lots to keep the children (and therefore us!) happy. Fantastic service from amazing staff. Everything is designed around making your lives with children easier!
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
I would recommend it to anyone. Only advice would be to take a jumper as the evenings can be chilly!

What were the best things about your holiday?
Peace and Quiet of the resort while full, Children´s facilities particularly for the very young, accommodation
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
Fantastic resort for families with excellent facilities for Children and a good programme for adults if you want to stray from your sun lounger. A great number of pools so you can avoid the crowds if you wish. My main advice would be to try Nortada restaurant on Martinhal Beach for a change and more reasonable prices - the food in the hotel is excellent but as a Portuguese resident I know how high the mark up is on drinks particularly the wine!

What were the best things about your holiday?
Martinhal, Martinhal & Martinhal. They just understand what travelling with children is all about and the valuable ethos that happy children make happy parents!
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
Book it! This resort was definitely busier this year than last as the word gets about. Book as much as you can before you travel eg kids clubs, activities and meals in the restaurants to avoid disappointment.
How did you find the Family Holidays Company service? How Can we improve in the futhre?
Brillant as usual! Thanks team for another superb holiday! Really small point, didn't find out about the possiblity of booking seats with BA until really late & opportunities to guarentee being seated together on the flights were very limited and an extra cost. Best to offer this service on booking and advise families about seating arrangements on the various airlines earlier. The last thing you want to worry about when flying with children is whether if you leave seats to check-in you'll actually get to sit together.

Cost of food three times local restaurants but not really much different.

The staff at the hotel are outstanding across the board - The level of service was fantastic. Everything is designed around family life and making parents' lives easier which was brilliant. There was a very relaxing atmosphere.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
It was the best holiday with children that we have ever had! It wasn't cheap but the expense felt worth it as it was so fantastic. Take a jumper for the evenings as it can get quite chilly with the wind (big plus during the day as it was warm but not oppressive heat).

What were the best things about your holiday?
the flexibilty of the accomodation/services, the beauty of the area and friendliness of staff/locals and finally the attention to detail that was present allowing for relaxation rather than consatnt list making!
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
If self catering use the supermarkets for the main shop (down the road) and only use on site shop for top ups. Definately visit the surfing beaches a short drive uo the west coast ( amado).

What were the best things about your holiday?
The staff were brilliant withour little girl and really friendly overall. There was a play facility at every eating location with staff there to supervise our little girl playnig so we could relax a bit. The resort was really nice and quiet as it was off peak.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
Everything was great but hire a car as there is very little in the immediate area so you need to be able to get further afield for things to do if you want to go off resort. A car will also enable you to reach the local supermarket and avoid the high prices of the on resort store.

Forget the hotel restaurants and bars and use the beach bars on Martinhal beach especially Nortada. Food and drinks in the hotel are way over-priced and Nortada provides the same food (and will cook special requests)and drinks together with a fantastic setting and an area of beach for the children to play in.

What were the best things about your holiday?
The proximity to the beach, The kids facilities and pools, Being with friends
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
The rooms are unsuitable for toddlers as everything is at coffee table height - tv, phone, music system, lights, crockery, glasses etc... so beware! Visit the beach restaurant (independent) as half the price and twice as good as the hotel. Double check things like babysitters as ours was cancelled without our knowledge! Some staff very friendly and helpful others extremely surly... from friends apparently this is true for Portugal... If you want all restaurants open etc. then don't go out of season, we went october half-term and one restaurant was closed and one only served a poor standard buffet (with nothing for kids to eat) As you'd expect the weather in October was a bit hit and miss - when it was sunny it was lovely, but cold (coat weather) when it was cloudy. And very windy (apparently this is a feature all year round).

What were the best things about your holiday?
Swimming pools, particularly the one near the beach with the trampoline play area, Village square with play area, Overall standard of the resort and attention to detail.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
Self catering probably requires a car, supermarket not easy to get to and shop on site nice but very limited. There are only three eating places on site and this is a bit tedious when you have a weeks holiday so consider how easy you will find it to get off the resort into Sagres, this is not easy with toddlers. Similarly, if your children are of walking but often asking for `up` to be carried you will need a buggy as the resort is a little hilly and gets a bit wasting to carry them everywhere. Otherwise, pitch up and relax as you will have a great holiday.

Would have been so grateful if the Itinery had detailed the meet and greet service, as I dont recall ever receiving the info (I'm sure I did) and totally forgot about checking I had this information until driving to the airport - if the info had been on the intinery it would have been fantastic and saved us having to book into the long stay carpark and pay an additional £84!!

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
We think Martinhal is great generally but especially for babies and over 5's, but the toddler age group is more difficult; there are no booster seats in the restaurants or available for the villas (its high chairs or nothing); no low sinks or stools in the resort toilets (so its prop them on your knee time); the childrens meals are huge (although they did let us split one meal between our two pre-schoolers); one of the restauramts doesnt open until 6.30pm for the evening; and the focus at this age appears to be on the drop off in kids club as there is only one small outdoor play area where parents can take their children. Oh and the potties provided in villas are terrible (can't get the wee out without it dribbling everywhere). You will find for this age group you need to take some of your own equipment.

What were the best things about your holiday?
The villa was superb, very comfortable and spacious. The kids club. Our 2 and half yr old daughter loved it and the staff were so friendly. The overall set up of the resort was very spacious and quiet. Although the resort was very booked up, it wasn't noticeable that there were lots of people there.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
It was so windy in the resort day and night. At night we needed trousers and cardigans to stay warm and during the day it was chilly in the shade or when you got out of the pool. The staff say the wind dies down in September.

What were the best things about your holiday?
The fact that Martinhal is not just "family friendly" but is in fact all about families - so no worry about annoying other people with your children's antics! Great, spacious, stylish accommodation in the bayside villa. Fantastic childcare available - for both our 6month and 2yr old - so we got a proper break with some 'grown-up' time.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
Martinhal / Sagres is very windy and so is noticeably cooler than other places in the Algarve - make sure you take some clothes to wrap up in for the early mornings & evenings. And don't expect to sit out on your balcony for drinks as the sun goes down without feeling the significant breeze. Book a table for dinner if you want to eat outside in the 5pm "rush hour" The onsite supermarket is small, but stocks most things that you might need for children - from nappies, baby milk (aptamil) and food - and adults, with great coffee and pastries, and a selection of takeaway dinners - and it is really really well priced for a captive audience. 1euro for 1.5l bottled water was a pleasant surprise - so don't think you have to head down to the supermarket in town for day to day bits. A nonslip bathmat for kids in the bath would be a great idea for the resort to supply - as our 2yr old found standing a little tricky - next time we'd probably take one of our own just to make bathtime a little easier. The bedrooms do have blackout blinds, but they only do so much. The children's bedroom in our bayside villa faced the sun in the evenings - so the room was quite light. Not a massive issue for us - but if your children are very light sensitive, you might want to think about bringing a set of the stick-on blackout fabric / blinds you can get to help a bit more.
How did you find the Family Holidays Company service? How Can we improve in the futhre?
Great service - and really helpful with BA's ridiculously difficult infant seat policy. That was the issue that caused the most frustration and I'm pleased we got to the bottom of it - hopefully it will prove useful for other families going forward. Was great to think that there was 'someone' to actually direct questions / issues to - rather than just an email address. The personal service made a real difference and I am already looking to planning my next trip with you.

Try and book a villa/house with an ocean view as close as possible to the village. Or if you have a garden house ask for the one closest to the village/kids club, some of them are quite a walk from the amenities.

What were the best things about your holiday?
1. Great children`s facilities. 2. Well equipped houses. 3. Lovely staff.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
1. Gets chilly at nights and most eating/drinking areas are outdoors/open, so take some warm clothes. 2. If you are planning to eat separately from your children, but are on half board, tell the hotel in advance because they will have to issue separate eating vouchers for you and children. The whole voucher system is a bit chaotic and irritating anyway. 3. The resort is a bit isolated, so if you like to be able to walk into villages etc, this might not be the place for you. 4. The beach can be windy, but we found it quite pleasant generally. 5. You have to pay for sunbeds on the beach.

Pristine, modern accommodation and facilities. Beautiful Beach. Lying on a jumbo beanbag at the main pool by the beach.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
You don`t need to bring much stuff as the resort is very well equipped. It can be very windy there which makes it noticably cooler than the rest of the Algarve. Consider some kind of transport if self catering as the nearest supermarket is a couple of miles and the shop in the resort has a limited selection of products. Watch you stuff! I had an expensive camera stolen whilst having lunch at Os Gambozinos. Perhaps an isolated incident, but not the kind of thing you expect at a secure, family resort.

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
Take a garden house if you have small children, you get a lot of space for your money with your own garden area and roof terrace as well as access to own pool within cluster of houses. Remember that there are 4 pools in total so don`t just stick to the one by the beach which is the busiest. Club 98 was always empty, as was the one by the garden houses. Hire a car - the shop on resort is limited and expensive. There are 2 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive that are much cheaper.

What were the best things about your holiday?
Quality of the Ocean View Appartment and the beautiful terrace where we sat whilst the boys were asleep. Fantastic facilities for young toddlers. Lovely unspoilt, unbusy beach and great selection of pools in the resort with toys for the little ones.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
If it`s windy go along to the next beach which is beautiful and sheltered. Use the deli on site the fresh bread, croissants and fruit make a great, quick and easy breakfast. Nappies, swim nappies and baby wipes in all sizes are available. A little local beach stall by Martinhal sells a good selection of beach toys at reasonable prices. Our twins loved their dumper truck and wheelbarrow

What were the best things about your holiday?
The accommodation is faultless, clean, perfect for families and great views, the pools are excellent and the food is also great.
Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?
It is worth realising that they are a new resort and that they are still trying to perfect some of the hotel workings, service etc. It isn`t bad by any means and most of the staff are superb, very friendly and helpful, just every now and then things take a bit longer or someone else does it a bit differently. The accommodation is excellent, but the little shop can be a bit expensive, so worth maybe a trip to the supermarket or handy to remember soap powder and dishwasher tablets. If you have a nespresso at home they have them too and so pop a couple of capsules in your luggage, to save yourselves buying them onsite. Restaurant Villa Vela is excellent in Sagres. The kids are so happy here so you end up being happy too.

Opened in 2010, the luxurious Martinhal, both sophisticated and contemporary, is one of the finest luxury family resort in Europe.

Located on a stunning sandy beach within a protected national park, the resort is far away from the tourist crowds of the Algarve. Carefully blended into the landscape it is the sort of place you can enjoy your own privacy in a chic, contemporary townhouse or head to communal areas such as the village square or pool when you (or your children) feel the need for activity or sociability.

The resort has three main categories of accommodation – the hotel offers interconnecting rooms, village (1, 2 and 3 bedroom houses) and luxury private villas with heated pools. Do ask us for advise as the room types can be confusing!

The resort has five swimming pools (all of which are heated), a tennis and sports club, a gym, a spa and a wide variety of water sports.

With a creche from 6 months, many family friendly extras such as gated playground, fat boy bean bags combined with the flexibility of spacious self catering accommodation in a beautiful unspoilt area of the Algarve, it is perfect for a superb family holiday.

The area...

This is one of the Algarve’s least developed regions, and in Sagres a friendly and informal atmosphere prevails, unhurried and quite charming.

Sagres, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, is set on a headland overlooking a picturesque harbour, within the boundaries of a protected but untamed natural park.  Classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty, the park is distinguished for its landscape, geology and flora and fauna.

It is the only part of Portugal that shares two different coastlines: the southern coast and the western coast. In all, there are around 25 different beaches to sunbathe and relax on. Beaches situated on the south west coast tend to be more sheltered and are ideal for watersports.

Inexorably linked with the sea, Prince Henry the Navigator, who helped finance Portugal’s Voyages of Discovery during the 15th century, established a school of navigation near the town.

The Sagres region is all about the great outdoors, and guests of Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel can either take advantage of the resort’s comprehensive sports and activities programme, or plan their own itinerary; hiking, biking, watersports...

What will the weather be like...

The Algarve on Portugal’s southern coast is blessed with sunshine all year.

May – September offers the best sunshine, warm and sunny with an average of 11 hours sunshine a day and virtually no rainfall, average temperatures ranging  between 23 – 30 C, although the sea breeze usually makes it pleasant in the hottest months.

The Algarve is a year round destination and winters are mild and perfect for families if you just want to relax and be warmer than in the UK. Daily temps are 15-18'C, perfect for golf or tennis. You would expect rain on some days between November - March.

Sagres is the most South-westerly point of Europe and is typically windier than many other resorts along the coast, as such the temperature does drop a few degrees. The winds are particularly strong during July and August a popular time with windsurfers.
