Modern in style with a Canarian design and traditional Spanish influences, families can enjoy the fine beach or chill out by the pools which are heated, so essential for young children (and their parents!) but strangely hard to find.

In an enviable location, the Sheraton Fuerteventura is set on a beautiful golden sandy beach with a backdrop of mountains, in the resort of Caleta de Fuste. With such a short transfer of just 15 minutes, it has one of the shortest journey times for winter sun so well worth considering if you have a week or less.

The resort welcomes families with open arms. Yambaland Kid's Club caters for children aged 4-12 years. The spacious Deluxe rooms are ideal for families allowing 2 adults and 2 children to share - very cost effective if you are happy to share - and the Premium deluxe rooms are even better, with a large terrace that opens out onto the gardens.

Conveniently located too, there are shops and restaurants a short walk away or the City is just approx 1km walk taking about 20 minutes on foot or a few minutes by car.

The area...

Fueteventura is a fairly small Island and there are not lots of tourist attractions found in other destiantions. Nature is key and there are some unusual landscapes to fascinate, especially the sand dunes.

Kids will love Oasis Park which is the islands zoo and has many animals including hippos, giraffes and a sea lion centre and there is a water park.

The beauty of the Sheraton Fuerteventura is its location, right on the sandy beach and ideally placed to stroll out to bars, cafes, restaurants, shops and even a cinema!

What will the weather be like...

When it comes to sunshine, the Canary Islands are perfect with an eternal spring-summer climate. They’re a year-round destination; you can pretty much take your pick of when to go.

The winter months – December to March – are cooler but still paradise compared any other short haul destination. You can expect average daytime temperatures to hover in the low 20’s dropping to a mild 14 degrees on average overnight and with 6 hours sunshine per day through all these months. It does rain occasionally especially in December and January.

The summer months – April to October are deceptive as give how warm the winter is, they are surprisingly mild. Almost perfect with a daily average of 27 degrees dropping to a comfortable 20 at night, virtually no rainfall and 10 hours sunshine a day, any of the summer months are good. There is a chance of a few very hot days.

The Northern shores of the islands are wetter than the more sheltered south.

Excellent facilities for small children, very friendly staff and a lovely spa!

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?

If you take a child under 4, then the crÃ¨che isn't legally able to take them without parental supervision, but they are happy to be as accommodating as they can. Apparently during school holidays there are often more children than adults, so be warned, but our son made a great friend on his first day which helped make the holiday that much more fun. Finally, there is a supermarket in the shopping centre a short walk away, which can be very useful for snacks etc

Family Holidays were fantastic, particularly as we had some issues when we were due to depart and they were very supportive and helpful the whole time until we finally got on a plane. This support continued when we got back in helping us to seek compensation. This whole additional level of support was very gratefully received, as made the whole experience far less stressful than if we had been managing it all on our own, so thank you again!!

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?

If you book interconnecting family rooms, make sure the hotel does not put you into one with an open balcony (I believe all on 3rd floor). They have a number of these and, unless you like the idea of everyone on your floor being able to walk up to your balcony window without any obstacle, then they won't be for you. We refused to accept this room and the hotel moved us to the 4th floor where the balconies are individual. We had to fight for this so don't accept their initial answer that they are full. The rooms themselves are very spacious and well appointed so no complaints there. Also, while the hotel itself is lovely, I wouldn't recommend the resort if you like going out into the local town to eat. The nearest town is a good 15 minute walk away along predominantly wasteland. There is a little shopping mall which is only 5 minutes away which has a food court but it isn't good quality to say the least. This didn't bother us as we were happy to stay in the resort which was lovely but we won't be returning. Overall, lovely hotel, great service, nice food but watch out for the shared balcony and don't expect to find a nice town locally within walking distance.

What were the best things about your holiday?

The pool area was great although could be a little difficult to find loungers for a family together during the busy half-term week. Access to the beach, across a small pedestrian promenade, and the super-sheltered beach were both great for kids. The kids, especially our 4 year old, loved all the hotel entertainment (something we usually avoid), joining in the evening mini-disco, the poolside Aqua disco and the adult pool Zumba.

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?

The half board option is good value and worthwhile as the local town is a bit of a walk with kids. There is a local (5 mins walk) supermarket where you can easily pickup lunch ingredients for a picnic or lunch on the hotel room terrace. We found the restaurant evening opening times a little late for our 2-year old who was always quite tired by then.

Great food, evening disco each night for the kids and several heated swimming pools.

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?

The kid's club facilities are really aimed at 4 year olds and up. There are very minimal, almost non-existent Childcare facilities included in the cost of the hotel for under 4's unless you pay for babysitting. For over 4's, the Kid's club did look very good but we didn't use it as our eldest didn't want to go on his own. I recommend going half board. It was good value and the food was good.

Food lets the hotel down - go out and visit cafes/restaurants. Though buffet is good for kids. It's just quite pricey for adults. Holiday with friends so you can share babysitting and get some time out.

Don't pay for interconnecting rooms if you're on the 3rd floor. You can simply open the back door as all terraces interconnect anyway.

What were the best things about your holiday?

Having fun, meeting friends and the Spa for my 9 year old Relaxing, and the hotel per my 11 year old For me, the hotel was well geared to the children's needs so it all worked well.

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?

The buffet did get a bit boring and the El Faro grill is quite expensive with limited choice for younger children as they tend to smother things in sauces, although we did enjoy our meal there. We should have ventured further into Caleta as we obviously didn't find the heart of the town with a better range of restaurants. The hotel seemed reluctant to let us use our half board allowance at lunchtime if we were not eating at one of the hotel's a la carte restaurants in the evening.

Any advice you would give to someone else taking the same holiday?

Doublecheck childrens club information before travelling, as opening times vary a lot. All the sites advertising this hotel were saying the club was open 1000-1800 for children aged 4 and over and 1000-1200 for 2-4s. In fact they were taking 2-4s in only from 1330 to 1500, which coincided with lunch and nap time and wasn't of much use to me. The 1000 to 1800 opening time was also inaccurate: the club itself was only open till 1700 and on two days a week till 1600. After that there was organized entertainment till 1800 in the hotel itself, but you couldn't leave the children unsupervised - so wasn't the same really. Also was surprised that they keep children indoors in the morning and arrange outdoor activities at noon - peak sunburn time! The club programme wasn't that great. The buffet was OK and reasonably varied - I was expecting worse, having read other reviews. I went full board as was on my own with two kids, but there is a decent beach restaurant on a jetty looking out to sea, just opposite the hotel. Also the poolside restaurant was not bad and reasonably priced.

I do personally update all the information we have on a very regulary basis but the hotel will change times to suit occupancy on any given week and it is virtually impossible to guarantee a particular slot prior to arrival at this hotel.
