The Balearic Islands are a bit of an enigma in the luxury family travel market.

They are high on many lists with numerous flights and short travel time.

However, historically, the top quality hotels are not particularly family friendly and only lower standard accommodation has good kids facilities.

Viva Zafiro in Alcudia aims to change that.

The hotel is in a great location as I know how much I enjoy being able to leave a hotel and walk to local restaurants, shops etc. The hotel is literally a few moments from a huge variety of both.

Overview

I ate outside the hotel twice and had excellent quality local food at very reasonable prices. Puerto De Alcudia does have a beach too and this is a short walk from the hotel too.

Back to the hotel itself.

The first thing is the rooms which are fab!

The lead in room is a Junior Suite and although open plan is large and can accommodate 2 adults and 2 small children.

If you need a separate sleeping area then you have two choices. The Zafiro Suite has a large living room and separate bedroom with proper sliding door.

They have 2 bed Family Suites too which have an additional bedroom which would be ideal for families of 5 or 6. They are a fair bit pricier though and a family of four would be comfortable in a normal Zafiro Suite. All rooms are very modern and well appointed but the Zafiro Suite and Family Suites also have a large double cupboard housing a fridge, sink, microwave and basic utensils. Because they have a small dining table too you could prepare simple meals here.

This might be a real asset if you have small children or infants.

Room

The layout of the hotel is that all rooms face inwards over the grounds and the pools. There are 11 pools in total and loads of parasols and sunbeds.

If the weather is inclement they have two heated indoor pools – one, uniquely, just for kids!

One of the pools in more like a  with a pirate ships, slides etc – kids would love it. There is an adult only pool too if your kids are in the Children’s club and want a bit of child free relaxation!

Pool

Kids club is great and they have an adjacent playground area with soft floors and all the normal slides, climbing apparatus etc. This has been cleverly positioned next to the terrace of the main restaurant so adults were relaxing at the table but able to keep an eye on the kids playing.

Mini discos are also put on in the evenings to entertain kids.

Entertainment is great, There is a show most nights. They put little chairs close to the front of the stage so kids can be right up close. At the end of the show, the entertainment staff get all the kids on stage to dance and sing. This was extremely popular with the kids I saw. It finishes by 10 and children were so tired they just all went to bed!

Food is very good with a main buffet restaurant for breakfast and a smaller one which offers continental breakfast for the late riser. Apart from the main restaurant there are four other themed restaurants. I ate in their Grill and food was top drawer.

Pool Bar

However, the big draw is that you can eat so easily outside the hotel that I would only take bed and breakfast and dip into the hotel restaurants when I could not be bothered to go out.

Any negatives? Well it is not on the beach but with such great pools and access to the local town I would not be put off.
